Discovery Bay Golf Club: A Century of Scenic Golf on the Olympic Peninsula
Just five miles south of Port Townsend, where the forest meets the sea, you’ll find one of Washington’s most storied and scenic places to play: Discovery Bay Golf Club. With nearly 100 years of history, panoramic views of the Olympic and Cascade mountains, and a laid-back rural charm, this 18-hole course offers a Northwest golf experience that’s as beautiful as it is approachable.
Formerly known as Chevy Chase Golf Club, Discovery Bay has been welcoming golfers since 1925—and today, it’s still winning fans for its value, vistas, and old-school hospitality.
Where Natural Beauty Meets Accessible Golf
Built on rolling pastureland above the bay, the course unfolds across a historic 117-acre property with wide fairways, dramatic elevation changes, and sweeping views of Discovery Bay, Mount Rainier, and Mount Baker on clear days.

Practice, Play, and Pups Welcome
Discovery Bay is home to the only covered driving range on the Olympic Peninsula—perfect for rainy day tune-ups. There’s also a large putting green and short game area, with club rentals and carts available for visitors.
And if you’re a dog owner, you’re in luck: Discovery Bay was rated the #1 Dog-Friendly Golf Course in the U.S. by BringFido.com in 2019. Just leash up, clean up, and enjoy the round with your four-legged caddie by your side.
A Course With Character
Discovery Bay isn’t your typical resort course—it’s rich with quirks and stories that make it one-of-a-kind. Among them:
The original first tee required golfers to hit over Cape George Road on a 300-yard par 4
A now-retired elevated platform tee box resembled a hangman’s gallows (minus the trap door)
The land was once part of the Saint’s Rest Inn, later the Chevy Chase Inn—several original buildings still stand and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places
And there’s even local legend: in 1862, three men landed on the beach with a stolen chest of gold sovereigns—part of a British payroll heist. The treasure has never been recovered… though you never know what a well-placed sand wedge might dig up.
